Africa’s Second Strongest Man Victor Kofi Ampofo Calls On Corporate Ghana

The second strongest man in Africa, Ghana’s Victor Kofi Owusu Ampofo alias Vandam has called on government and corporate organizations in the country to support the sport.

He mentioned finances, logistics, and ambassadorial deals as tools to help make the sport more lucrative.

The Fitrip GH athlete placed second at the recently-held edition of Africa Strongman held in South Africa, beating competition from representatives from all over the continent.

Speaking to HOMNEWS, he said strongman is a lucrative sport just like formula one among others adding that it is very unfortunate our country hasn’t seen it yet and “I hope to see this change”.

He insisted that taking part in any of these would put Ghana on the map. “I hope to see more private companies shed some attention to this sport and provide brand ambassadorial deals. This would motivate others to join the sport and support those of us already in. Fitrip GH has supported me in this journey and I look forward to other gyms, companies, and organizations to do the same for other strongman athletes.”

When asked what his reaction was when he was picked to represent Ghana in SA he said “I had mixed feelings. I was glad I finally had the chance to travel outside of Ghana to compete in a real strongman competition with contestants from other countries but, this is the case I didn’t know the people I was going to compete with and most of the events were new to me.”

He mentioned that the experience was most solemnly. “It was a great experience. I met nice people with similar mindsets. Regardless of the fact that we were competing against each other, contestants cheered each other up, and the willingness to help another mate was surprising to me because it is not the same in Ghana. “

Vandam intimated that the competition really taught him to be tougher than he’s always been. Adding that he learned to trust his instincts and listen to his body. “This experience has helped me grow in this sport and for sure I’m going to use all that I learned to improve my skills.”

On the deficiencies in Ghana’s fitness sector as against other countries, the sportsman noted that “they have the equipment readily available and have the opportunity to use them whenever and wherever. This allows them to become used to the machines and improved their techniques – an advantage I did not have because I was unfamiliar with many of them.”

“In Ghana, thanks to Fitrip GH, we have some of the equipment which really helped me in my placing 2nd.”

He added “unlike Ghana that we perceive stout men as a menace, it’s a profession out there, people do this full time because they understand the sport. With the experience, I’ve come to the realization that the more I get serious, the higher and better I go and become. So I’m more serious and focused now, and with Fitrip I will surely take part in more international competitions with the ultimate being The World Strongest Man. Arnold’s Classic, South Africa 2021 in May and hopefully we shall take part.“

Herbalife Nutrition Shares Insights On Yoga Styles And Unique Benefits

For some people, yoga is gentle stretching and relaxation. For others, it’s about building strength, flexibility and coordination or even a hard-core workout. Make no mistake: yoga is most definitely an exercise with the potential to bring unique benefits and challenges.

So what style of yoga should you choose? There are many to explore but we’ve rounded up some of the three basic styles to appeal to every level of energy and challenge:

Hatha: the mindful one

Hatha yoga truly encourages the mind-body connection. It is a very traditional practice focused on slow, controlled and focused movements while working with the breath and calming the mind. For many yogis, hatha is the first yoga style they’ll experience and often remains a lifetime favourite for that full body-and-mind workout.

Ashtanga: the dynamic one

There are many variations of this style, but traditional Ashtanga yoga is based on a set of flowing movements, each one directly connected to the breath. If you like to follow a set routine, this energetic, strengthening style of yoga is for you. Ashtanga devotees love this style as much for its stress-relieving effects as for the physical challenge.

Bikram: the challenging one

Bikram yoga (or hot yoga) offers a challenge like no other. It’s based very closely on traditional Ashtanga yoga but with the added element of heat. Bikram encourages the body through sweat, while the heated environment helps deepen stretches and in turn improves flexibility, tone and strength. While it’s not ideal for absolute beginners, those who practice this style often say there’s no going back!

Whichever style you choose, yoga is a form of exercise that can help you build physical and mental strength at the same time. And, as yogis will tell you, it’s a constantly evolving practice which can be both challenging and satisfying, every single day.

Why You Should Sweat It Out: Insights From Herbalife Nutrition

Sweating—particularly when working out—is your body’s natural defence from over-heating. When sweat evaporates from your skin’s surface, it removes excess heat and cools you down. But if you’ve spent a sweltering dry season trying to keep cool and avoid getting sweaty, it’s time to rethink your relationship with sweat as the rains arrive! With cooler weather on the way, it’s time to get your sweat on—but on your own terms.

While experts say there’s no relationship between sweat and calories burned, sweating can be a sign that you’re working at a certain intensity during your workout, because your body is generating enough heat that it needs to cool down.

So, even if you’re not a fan of getting sweaty, don’t let it put you off getting the benefits of higher intensity exercise because the pluses far outweigh the negatives. Think about the positive feelings you probably experience due to the satisfaction of moving your body and getting closer to reaching your fitness goals.

And there’s more good news. Whether it’s running, mountain-biking, boxing, dance-based exercise classes or weights in the gym, there are a multitude of ways to minimise and manage sweat as you work out:

• Work out early in the morning or later as the day cools down

• Remember that caps and head coverings could trap heat, so leave them off if you can

• Wear sweat-wicking fabrics that are pre-treated with bacteria fighting elements to keep your skin clean and dry

• Keep make-up to a minimum to avoid clogged pores and breakouts

• Head bands stop sweat from getting into your eyes and are more hygienic than wiping your face with hands or a towel

• Cleanse your skin after your workout for a clean and fresh feeling; if you can’t shower right away.

• No-shower hair hack: Try spraying a little hairspray over your hair before exercising and then brush it out after

However, your workout, don’t be afraid to sweat it out and remember to hydrate!

Herbalife Nutrition Advises On Proper Eating Habits For Improved Sleep

Few things feel as good as waking up rested and energised after a great sleep. But for many of us, that’s hard to come by. Plenty of factors can influence sleep quality, but let’s take a look at the role of food choices made during the day.

Preliminary research has proven that eating habits may impact the quality and length of your sleep. This can turn into a vicious cycle—you don’t sleep well at night, and the energy-giving foods you turn to the next day to keep you going could be the exact same foods (caffeine and high-fat snacks) that are sabotaging your rest.

Sound familiar? Well, when it comes to improving your sleep, there are many factors which are important, including good nutrition/eating habits. Here are our top tips for how to eat right to sleep tight:

  • Going to bed with a very full stomach may lead to discomfort and sleep-sabotaging indigestion; hence, aim for just enough to satisfy.

  • Don’t overdo the calories and amount of fat at dinner time. Aim for balanced meals including healthy sources of carbohydrates – veggies, fruits, whole grains and beans.
  • Watch your intake of caffeine and alcohol, which can disrupt normal sleep patterns and result in those middle-of-the-night wakeful moments.
  • Do most of your hydrating earlier in the day. A full bladder can interfere with a good night’s sleep, so be sure to taper off your fluid intake during the evening.

Just using a few of these tweaks could transform your slumber, so give them a try. Sweet dreams!

Qatar Airways Vice-President, Africa Mr. Hendrik Du Preez said: “We are delighted to land in Accra today.  Qatar Airways has wanted to operate flights to Accra for some time and while the pandemic has slightly delayed these plans, it has not stopped us from fulfilling our commitment to passengers in Ghana and around the world.

As one of the fastest growing economies in the region known for its local hospitality and highly sought after agricultural exports, I am certain Accra will grow to be an important destination in our network. With flights to more than 28 destinations in Asia-Pacific, 31 in Europe, 12 in the Middle East and nine in North America, passengers wanting to travel to or from Ghana can now enjoy seamless connectivity via the Best Airport in the Middle East, Hamad International Airport. Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) Managing Director, Mr. Yaw Kwakwa said: “As Operators and Managers of Kotoka International Airport (KIA), GACL is delighted about Qatar Airways’ announcement to launch passenger flight operations to Accra.  We welcome this long-awaited decision, which will expand seat capacity and offer greater connectivity options to destinations across the world for the travelling public.

We believe, that together, we can achieve GACL’S vision of positioning Ghana as the Preferred Aviation Hub and Leader in Airport Business in West Africa.”

By mid-October, Qatar Airways will operate 47 weekly flights to 15 destinations in Africa, including Addis Ababa, Dar es Salaam, Djibouti, Entebbe, Kigali, Kilimanjaro, Lagos, Maputo, Mogadishu, Nairobi, Seychelles, Tunis, Windhoek and Zanzibar. In line with the airline’s expanding operations across Africa, passengers can look forward to a flavour of African hospitality onboard with the carrier’s multicultural cabin crew including more than 30 African nationalities. Additionally, passengers across our network can also enjoy a variety of African movies, TV shows and music on Oryx One, Qatar Airways’ in-flight entertainment system.

According to the latest IATA data, Qatar Airways has become the largest international carrier between April to July by fulfilling its mission of taking people home. This enabled the airline to accumulate unmatched experience in carrying passengers safely and reliably and uniquely positioned the airline to effectively rebuild its network. The carrier has stringently implemented the most advanced safety and hygiene measures on board its aircraft and in Hamad International Airport.

Qatar Airways’ onboard safety measures for passengers and cabin crew include the provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for cabin crew and a complimentary protective kit and disposable face shields for passengers. Business Class passengers on aircraft equipped with Qsuite can enjoy the enhanced privacy this award-winning business seat provides, including sliding privacy partitions and the option to use a ‘Do Not Disturb (DND)’ indicator. For full details of all the measures that have been implemented onboard and in HIA, please visit qatarairways.com/safety.

Qatar Airways operations are not dependent on any specific aircraft type. The airline’s variety of modern fuel-efficient aircraft has meant it can continue flying by offering the right capacity in each market. Due to COVID-19’s impact on travel demand, the airline has taken the decision to ground its fleet of Airbus A380s as it is not commercially or environmentally justifiable to operate such a large aircraft in the current market. The airline’s fleet of 49 Airbus A350 and 30 Boeing 787 are the ideal choice for the most strategically important long-haul routes to Africa, the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific regions.

Qatar Airways’ home and hub, Hamad International Airport (HIA), has implemented stringent cleaning procedures and applied social distancing measures throughout its terminals. Passenger touchpoints are sanitized every 10-15 minutes and boarding gates and bus gate counters are cleaned after each flight. In addition, hand sanitizers are provided at immigration and security screening points. HIA was recently ranked “Third Best Airport in the World”, among 550 airports worldwide, by the SKYTRAX World Airport Awards 2020. HIA was also voted the ‘Best Airport in the Middle East’ for the sixth year in a row and ‘Best Staff Service in the Middle East’ for the fifth year in a row.

Make Sleep a Priority

Snack Smarter

Lots of us snack our way through the day, but many snacks tend to be low in nutrients and high in calories! Snack smartly with healthier food swaps and versions of your favourite snacks that will satisfy your cravings without the extra calories!

Take Stock of Your Week

It goes without saying that modern life can be stressful. Take stock of what happens in your week and where your time currently goes. It could help you to discover hidden moments of downtime that you didn’t know about before!

Reach For Your Goals

In many countries, the recommended daily amount of exercise is at least 30 minutes. If you want to improve your current fitness level, you need to make time for it. Set aside 45-60 minutes a day for you to warm, up, exercise and cool down to achieve the best results.

A Lifestyle Tailored To You

We are all individuals with different body types, who respond differently to exercise and lifestyle changes. Centre your healthy and active lifestyle plan on what you personally enjoy. Choose a time of day that fits your schedule for exercise and find ways to incorporate good personal choices into your daily routine.

Check in With Your Emotions

The way we feel about ourselves can affect our energy level, effort level and results. Boost your confidence by writing down your health goals, your feelings and say five positive things about yourself every day. It will help you to stay positive about achieving your goals: even on days when you go off plan.

Don’t Compare and Despair

It’s natural for us to compare ourselves to others. Being inspired by a friend’s progress can be very motivating and encourage us to reach our goals, but, there’s a fine line between feeling inspired and inadequate. Remember: you are a unique individual and your personal progress is just that: personal.
